Afternoon Tea

As part of Class one’s DT learning, the children have been finding out about healthy eating, food hygiene and traditional baked goods.  They started their learning journey looking at the difference between a Devon and Cornish cream tea and how it is different to an afternoon tea.  They sampled different types of bread and spent time learning new knife skills using the bridge and claw method to safely cut and prepare food.  The children then designed their own healthy sandwich, thinking carefully about what elements to include and what to leave out to avoid a soggy sandwich. After practising with a prototype and tasting and evaluating it, the children modified their designs to add the improvements.  To celebrate our learning the children held an afternoon tea event and invited their family to sample their delicious, healthy sandwiches and evaluate them together.  They were also served some tasty scones prepared the Devon way with the cream on the bottom!   The class teachers were impressed with how independent the children have become over the term with using the different tools safely to prepare their sandwiches and scones.
