Harvest Lunch

Harvest Lunch

On Tuesday 8thOctober 2019, the children of Class 2 had a busy morning preparing a delicious lunch for a group of very special guests. As part of this term’s Design and Technology (Food Technology) work, the children followed recipes, using a range of food preparation techniques, to prepare a variety of salads: coleslaw, wild rice and bean salad, pasta salad, Waldorf salad, lentil and feta salad with sundried tomato and potato salad. Some of the produce they used was harvested from our school garden. The children also made individual apple pies for dessert.

Soon after the food preparation was complete, the guests began to arrive. The guests invited to this special lunch were all past staff and pupils of the school, who had agreed to come in and talk to the children about their memories of Branscombe C of E Primary School, as part of the children’s investigations into the history of our school. Having joined the guests for lunch, taken them on a tour of the school and interviewed them about their memories, the children enjoyed hearing tales of days gone by as the guests reminisced about some of their favourite memories. They learned about how the children at the school during World War II were each assigned houses in the village to go to for safety in the event of an air raid siren. They learned about the time when the school had a swimming pool on site and the occasion when, while emptying the pool for cleaning, the head teacher received a phone call from the post office down the road to say that the water was not draining properly and the post office was being flooded! Another guest, whose grandmother, as caretaker of the school, used to live in the schoolhouse next door, talked about how the children would throw any leftover food over the wall from where the school garden is now, to feed the pigs that lived in the field there!

The children thoroughly enjoyed the day and have begun to make a scrap book about the stories they heard to preserve as a ‘secondary source’ of information for future pupils of the school.
