Autumn - Remembrance Day

As is our custom, the children of Branscombe School led a short service of Remembrance at St. Winifred’s church on Wednesday 11th November. The children had prepared some readings reflecting on the reasons for Remembrance day. We were joined in the church by members of the local community including parents, churchgoers and members of the Branscombe chapter of the British Legion. After our opening hymn (When a Knight Won his Spurs) and our introductory readings, we all went up to the war memorial outside the church where we observed a two-minute silence together with other visitors (including some passing cyclists) and laid our poppy wreath by the memorial. The children then planted crosses marked with the names of men from Branscombe who gave their lives in World War I and World War II.

After that, we returned to the church, with a somewhat larger congregation, where children from Class 2 read poems they had written about Remembrance and children from Class 1 led us in prayer. We sang a second hymn (Make me a channel of your peace) and the service ended with a blessing from Reverend Hilary.
